Wayne State University School of Medicine

Day of Information

STUDENT INFORMATION

You are to enter the Fox Theatre through the Prime Seat Entrance (this entrance is just across the street from the Fox Theatre Parking Structure) on Montcalm Ave. The robing and assembly areas cannot be reached through the theatre's other entrances; therefore, graduates will be admitted ONLY through the Prime Seat Entrance Door on Montcalm Ave. Fox Theatre staff and medical school personnel will greet you at the Montcalm St. entrance and direct you to the robing/assembly area.

You must report to the Fox Theatre no later than 1:15 p.m. Given the amount of freeway construction in the metropolitan area and the unannounced closing of freeways as well as entrance and exit ramps, be certain to allow yourself and advise your guests to allow for unexpected traffic delays. Commencement will begin at 2:00 p.m. We cannot delay the start of the ceremony for the late arrival of either graduates or their guests. Audience seating is on a first come basis. Seats cannot be “held” for the arrival of others.

Return of academic gown: Immediately following the ceremony, student gowns and hoods are to be returned to the student robing area. The cap and tassel are your keepsake of Commencement.

FACULTY INFORMATION

We ask that you arrive at the Fox Theatre no later than 1:30 p.m.

All Faculty must use the "Suite" entrance (there is a red awning over the doorway). This entrance is located on Montcalm Street which is directly across from the Fox Theatre parking structure. Academic Regalia will be delivered directly to the Fox Theatre. There will be staff there to assist you with robing. After you have picked up your regalia and are properly robed, you will be seated until the procession begins. All faculty must be robed and in the line of march no later than 1:50 p.m.

GUEST INFORMATION

The doors will open at 1:00 p.m. for the immediate seating of guests in the auditorium. The lobby area, restrooms and main floor audience seating are fully accessible to persons with mobility limitations. However, the theatre does not provide wheelchairs. The Fox Theatre staff will escort wheelchair guests to the main floor seating area set aside to accommodate guests in wheelchairs. Due to fire and safety regulations, the aisles cannot be blocked. NO GUEST WILL BE ADMITTED WITHOUT A TICKET AND SEATS CANNOT BE HELD FOR LATE ARRIVEES. The lobby area must be cleared before the academic procession can begin. All guests must be seated in the auditorium by 1:50 p.m.

Children under age six should not to be brought to the Commencement. The program is long and boring for small children. They frequently become restless, cranky and noisy, disrupting the program, embarrassing their parents and spoiling the ceremony for everyone.
